Eagle: Golfing With the President

Summary

Eagle is a physical card game made for a game design class at UCI. We had to develop and pitch a card game with a specific set of constraints. Our constraints for Eagle were that it had to be inspired by golf, set in the modern day, and involve deception as a mechanic. We chose to theme our game as a role-based deception game inspired by Werewolf and Secret Hitler, where players take the role of various politicians on a golfing trip with the President. All of the players are divided into two parties and are trying to dominate the conversation with their own agenda while trying to isolate and silence the other party.

What I Did

I worked with a team of designers to design, pitch, and iterate on the game over the course over several weeks. We started with a pretty simple mechanic and refined it with frequent playtesting and feedback sessions.

What I Learned

This game is the one project of mine that has benefited most clearly from playtesting. Playtesters had a lot of suggestions which sparked discussion about the game's balance and the efficacy of certain strategies. We would then implement solutions to these problems and test those which eventually expanded our game's mechanics naturally which felt good compared to most games which need to be pared down.
